Many philosophers have argued that time is not objective, to be measured on a chronograph, but is instead the produce of our choice of a convenient concept. One of philosophy’s most contentious issues is whether the metric of time is conventional or whether time itself is conventional. Another contentious issue that concerns the nature of time is whether it exists independently of change or whether it requires change to exist. Relational theories of time imply time’s existence demands a physical process in the universe such as an electron’s movement. Substantival theories of time suggest, on the other hand, that space-time relations are a container for events, and that the container would exist regardless of whether or not the events took place. Relational theories posit that the container would not exist without the events inside it. A relational theorist would argue that space-time is like citizenship, if the citizens (the space-time events) are removed, there will be no citizenship left. Whilst everyone will agree that time cannot be measured without changes, the contentious issue is whether it exists without changes. That space-time still exists even if there are no events or physical objects in the universe, is the substantival theory. Relational theories however, will argue that space-time is nothing more than the spatiotemporal relationships between objects and events.
