The Wicker Man is a wonderful British film that was released in 1973 and was directed by Robin Hardy and written by Anthony Shaffer. Starring Diane Cilento, Britt Ekland, Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt, and Edward Woodward, the film is now considered a cult classic. The story centres on Police Sergeant Neil Howie’s visit to the isolated island of Summerisle on the hunt for a missing girl who the locals claim never existed. A devout Christian, Howie is appalled by the Pagan religion he encounters being practised by the inhabitants of the island.
The Wicker Man was very well received by film enthusiasts and critics. In 2004, Total Film magazine listed The Wicker Man as the sixth best British film of all time. The film magazine Cinefantastique described The Wicker Man as “The Citizen Kane of Horror Movies” and in 1978, the film won the Saturn Award for the Best Horror film.
